3G Shutdown NZ 2025 | Protect Your Security Alarms

If you have a monitored security system, you’ve probably heard all the buzz about upgrading your 3G alarm system. But why?

What is The 3G Network?

The 3G network is New Zealand’s third-generation mobile network, which has been the backbone for mobile data and communications since the early 2000s. While it enabled devices to send data reliably, it is now being retired in 2025–2026, making way for 4G and 5G. This newer technology is much faster, more efficient, and provides a more stable network.

Which Devices and Security Systems Are Affected?

Security alarm systems (and other connected devices) have small modules — also known as communicators. They work by linking to the mobile network, sending alerts to your monitoring service.

Any equipment relying on these 3G modules will lose connectivity if you don’t upgrade before the shutdown.

The type of devices impacted include the following;

– Older mobile phones
– Some security system apps
– Monitored security alarm systems
– Gate openers or controlled entries
– Vehicle GPS trackers
– Medical alarms & personal safety devices
– Farm equipment sensors & livestock trackers
– Business asset trackers
– EFTPOS terminals

As you can see, it isn’t just a 3G security alarm system that will be affected. If you have older equipment in your home or business, I recommend you seek expert advice from a trusted professional.

Unfortunately, some operators are using the shutdown to misinform the public and advise them that they need to replace everything. With regards to security systems, this is, in most cases, untrue.

If your equipment is currently monitored over the 3G network, you only need to upgrade the 3G communicator (which is a quick and inexpensive fix).

When is the 3G network being phased out?

Originally, the 3G network was to be phased out in 2024; however, this deadline was pushed out. Now, 2degrees and One NZ are indicating a late 2025 deadline, whereas Spark has confirmed their cut-off date is 31 March 2026.

In summary

Regardless of the exact dates your provider gives, we know the 3G network will cease to exist soon. Older security systems and connected devices relying on 3G will lose connectivity without an upgrade. By preparing now, you can avoid your alert systems failing and putting your home and business at unnecessary risk.

💡 Quick Tip: To test if your old mobile phone is on 3G, simply text 3G to 550. You will get an instant notification from your telecommunications provider.

FAQ

Q: What happens if my 3G monitored security alarm system is not upgraded?

A: If you don’t upgrade, your alarm will still operate but it will lose connectivity and will no longer communicate with the monitoring station through the 3G network. This will put your property and assets at greater risk.

Q: When will 3G be switched off in NZ?

A: Currently, 2degrees and One New Zealand advise that they will be phasing out the network by the end of 2025. Spark has communicated that their shutdown will be by the end of 31 March 2026. These dates are current at the time this blog was published.

Q: Do I have to replace my security alarm system that uses the 3G network?

A: Every brand of security alarm system is different, so you need to check with your experienced security technician and consultant. Typically, to ensure your security system continues to protect your home or business, you need only upgrade your 3G communicator. Secure Time provides free security assessments, so if you are unsure what to do, or even if your system uses 3G, get in touch.
